Why AI Answers Skip Your Store: 2026 Study Finds 46% Name No Local Business

Two 2026 studies show AI local answers often name no local business at all, while Reddit threads get cited heavily. This guide unpacks what the 46% figure really means and how local stores can improve their odds of being named by AI answers.

Why AI Answers Skip Your Store: 2026 Study Finds 46% Name No Local Business

You ask an AI, "any good dentists near me?" It hands you a tidy answer — and your name is nowhere in it.

Worse, it cites a Reddit thread, but skips the store you have run for ten years.

You are not imagining it. Two 2026 studies point the same way: AI local answers routinely leave local businesses out.

AI Local Answers Name No Business Nearly Half the Time — But It Is a 50-Question Australian Sample

According to a July 2026 test by Australian digital marketing firm Snowball Productions (published by Daily Tribune), 50 everyday questions were run across 4 AI platforms, and 23 of them — that is 46% — returned answers naming no local business at all.

The four platforms were ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode. The questions were the everyday kind: where to eat nearby, where to get something fixed, where to buy.

The number is startling. But keep a cool head.

The scope matters, or the figure gets misused fast:

  • This is a study run by a marketing firm, not a large academic survey
  • The sample was only 50 questions, which is statistically small
  • It tested the Australian market, not the whole world

So "46%" is not a universal law, and you cannot lift it to claim "half of all local stores are ignored by AI." Treat it as a warning light instead: whether AI bothers to name a local business has always been shaky.

Still, the direction is worth noting for local stores. When we audit AI visibility for stores, we hit the same thing — ask an AI about a local service and the list comes back with no local shops, just portals and forums.

Why AI Would Rather Cite Reddit Than Your Website

The same Snowball study has a sharper finding: in those answers, Reddit was the most-cited source, cited more often than the businesses' own websites.

Why does this happen?

When AI builds an answer, it favors content with discussion, context, and real reviews. A Reddit thread has all three: someone asks, someone answers, and a pile of first-hand takes sits underneath. A business site that only lists an address and phone number simply loses on information density.

In other words, AI does not dislike you. Your content is just not easy for it to grab.

One warning here, because a lot of coverage mashes the two studies together.

The other one is a piece published by industry outlet Search Engine Journal on July 16, 2026, citing tracking data from Uberall (Search Engine Journal). Its claim: Reddit accounts for one in five (about 20%) of off-site citations in AI answers, growing 30% year over year, and roughly three-quarters of businesses are absent from the AI conversations happening about their category.

It looks similar, but this is a different study with different numbers. Snowball says "Reddit was cited more than local business sites"; Uberall says "Reddit is 1/5 of all off-site citations." Those are not the same figure, so do not stitch them into one sentence.

Forum Posts and Community Threads Are Actually a GEO Asset

If AI loves citing community discussion this much, then whether your brand shows up in those threads stops being a footnote and becomes an asset you can work on.

This has a name: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). In plain terms, it means getting your information cited by AI. Traditional local SEO looks after Google Map rankings; GEO adds one more layer — whether AI mentions you when it answers a question.

Depending on your market, these are the kinds of places AI may pull citations from:

  • Community threads discussing local stores
  • Real reviews on forums and local groups
  • Google reviews and Maps Q&A
  • Hands-on posts from bloggers and creators

From what we see, for the same store, "people are talking about it online" versus "only has a website" makes a big difference in how often AI mentions it.

But this path has honest downsides, and it is not all upside.

It is slow, and the payoff is not controllable — you cannot guarantee AI will cite any particular post. More importantly, do not fake reviews or run bot accounts to seed threads. That violates platform rules, and if you get caught, your Google Business Profile can be suspended. The right move is to do the work well so people genuinely want to talk, then invite real customers to leave real reviews.

Want AI and customers to see you at the same time? Content has to be rewritten to be easy to cite. That is exactly what we do.

How Local Stores Can Improve Their Odds of Being Named by AI

To get named by AI, the core is one sentence: put clean, consistent, structured business information in the places AI reaches for.

Here is the direction from both studies, translated into a checklist you can act on:

1. Fill your Google Business Profile completely

This is the foundation of all local visibility. Name, address, phone, hours, category, photos — leave nothing blank. For the details, see our Complete Google Business Profile Tutorial.

2. Keep NAP consistent everywhere

NAP means Name, Address, Phone. These three must look identical across your website, Google, social profiles, and directory sites, so AI and Google do not get confused about who you are. See our Local Citation Building Guide.

3. Add schema and local FAQs to your location pages

The SEJ/Uberall piece notes that the base layer of a multi-location "five-play stack" is exactly this: clean location data across directories, dedicated pages per location, with schema markup, local FAQs, and review validation. The full five plays live in their webinar, but most stores have not even nailed this foundation.

4. Build real reviews and real discussion

As covered above, community discussion is a GEO asset. Rather than stress, make the service good enough that people want to share, then naturally invite customers to review and answer real questions people ask about your category.

5. Write content as answer-first, standalone-quotable blocks

AI likes passages it can lift straight into an answer. Lead each short section with the conclusion and make it self-contained — avoid "as mentioned above" phrasing that only makes sense if you scroll back. That way AI can grab one block and cite you.

None of these five is a new trick. They are the fundamentals of solid local SEO — it is just that in the AI era, the gap between doing them and skipping them gets amplified. To see how the whole foundation gets built, start with our Complete Local SEO Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

AI answers don't mention my store — did I do something wrong?

Not necessarily. According to Snowball Productions' 2026 test of 50 questions, 46% of local AI answers named no local business at all, so this is common AI behavior right now, not a targeting of you. What you can do is clean up your business information and get people talking about you online to improve your odds of being picked up.

Is the "46% name no business" figure trustworthy?

Take it with a grain of salt. It comes from a study Snowball, a marketing firm, ran itself, with a sample of only 50 questions in the Australian market — not a large academic survey, and not local to your market. It works as a trend warning, but treating it as a precise universal fact is a misuse.

Should I go spam reviews on Reddit or forums?

No. Even though the research shows Reddit-style communities get cited heavily by AI, deliberately spamming reviews or running fake accounts violates platform rules, and getting caught can even get your Google Business Profile suspended. The right answer is to deliver good service and encourage real customers and users to discuss you naturally.

Is GEO a separate thing from traditional local SEO?

Not separate — more like layers. Traditional local SEO looks after Google Maps and organic rankings; GEO (generative engine optimization) adds a layer so AI cites you when it answers a question. The foundation is the same: clean, consistent business information plus real reviews.

How long until I see results from all this?

Local SEO usually takes 3 to 6 months to show clearly, and AI citation is slower and less controllable because you cannot decide when AI crawls or which post it grabs. Treat it as long-term compounding, not a this-week tactic.

Recap: Minding Local Visibility in the AI Era

Looking back at these two 2026 studies, the point is actually simple:

  1. AI often skips local businesses — in the Australian 50-question test, 46% of local answers named no store, but it is a small, Australia-only sample, so don't treat it as a universal law
  2. AI favors community discussion — Snowball says Reddit was cited more than business sites; SEJ/Uberall separately say Reddit is 1/5 of off-site citations and about 3/4 of businesses are absent from AI conversations, and the two figures should be read separately
  3. Forums and threads are a GEO asset — but built on real discussion, not spam
  4. The fix for local stores is still fundamentals — business profile, NAP consistency, structured location pages, real reviews, standalone-quotable content

AI doesn't dislike you. It just doesn't have an easy-to-grab version of you yet. Get the foundation right, and getting named is only a matter of time.
